Mary M. Steele Morgan (1925-2015) was a social activist who devoted her life to civic service. An active member of many social organizations, from the American Civil Liberties Union to the Older Women's League (OWL), in the early 1970s she helped launch the feminist movement in Dayton, Ohio, with the founding of Dayton Women's Liberation from her basement. Morgan was also the first woman to run for the Dayton City Commission, in 1969. In her nearly nine decades of life, she witnessed the twentieth century's most climactic eras and events: the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, the "Better Homes and Gardens" 1950s, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the Women's Liberation Movement, and the Digital Age. For as long as she was able, she fought for equality-equality of gender, sexual orientation, race, class, and age. Mary grew up in an era in which girls were forbidden to ride bicycles, yet she went on to participate in the civic life of the United States in so many meaningful ways, as this book testifies. Mary's March: A Social Activist's Life from 1925 to the Digital Age brings together a selection of Mary's writings: memoirs, essays for her high school newsletter, short stories, poetry, formal letters, tributes, dramatic scripts, and letters to the editor, many of which were published. Taken together, Mary's writings represent her unique voice, the enormous range of her interests, and the strength of her social commitment. It was Mary's dying wish that this book represent her legacy to the world, her hope for humanity and a future in which all will be free and treated equally.
