Unlike most natural colours that are based on pigment absorption, the striking iridescent and intense colouration of many butterflies, birds or beetles stems from the interaction of light with periodic sub-micrometer surface or volume patterns, so called “photonic structures”. These “structural colours” are increasingly well understood, but they are difficult to create artificially and exploit technologically. In this thesis the field of natural structural colours and biomimetic photonic structures is covered in a wide scope, ranging from plant photonics to theoretical optics. It demonstrates diffractive elements on the petal surfaces of many flowering plant species; these form the basis for the study of the role of structural colours in pollinator attraction. Self-assembly techniques, combined with scale able nanofabrication methods, were used to create complex artificial photonic structures inspired by those found in nature. In particular, the colour effect of a Papilio butterfly was mimicked and, by variation of its design motive, enhanced. All photonic effects described here are underpinned by state-of-the-art model calculations.

The focus of this study is on chromosomes, but it also includes very detailed chapters on phylogeny, classification, biogeography, and especially on reproduction, oogenesis, spermatogenesis, and embryogenesis. Further notable sections are devoted to developmental biology, life history and population declines in hemiphractids. The major proportion of this book describes the karyotypes of 397 individuals representing 23 hemiphractid species. All karyotypes are illustrated by superb photographs selected from many hundreds taken. Modern techniques of preparation including special staining, molecular probes, in situ hybridization, and genome size measurements were used to generate these data which are also interpreted in context with the cytogenetic data published for other amphibian taxa or vertebrates. Providing a wealth of current and archival information on hemiphractid biology and cytogenetics, this monograph is recommended for specialists in the fields of zoology, herpetology, embryology and cytogenetics, as well as for students with an interest in vertebrate cytogenetics.

About the Authoress Savitri Devi (1905-1982) is one of the most original and influential National Socialist thinkers of the post-World War II era. Born Maximine Julia Portaz in Lyons, France, she was of English, Greek, and Italian ancestry and described her national¬ity as "Indo-European." She earned Master's degrees in philosophy and chemistry and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Lyons.
